Pool Salt Calculator
Estimate how much salt to add to your pool based on water volume, current salt level, and your salt system's target salinity. Use the result to plan salt additions while avoiding unnecessary over-salting.
Calculate How Much Pool Salt You Need
Estimate the amount of salt needed to reach your target salt level using your pool volume and current salt reading.
Your Estimated Salt Requirements
Your pool needs approximately 275 pounds of salt to increase its salt level from 1,000 ppm to 3,200 ppm.
Confirm your salt chlorinator's recommended operating range before adding salt. Test your pool water with a reliable salt test, add salt gradually according to the product instructions, allow it to dissolve and circulate, and retest before adding more.
The calculation assumes an accurate pool volume and current salt reading. Actual requirements may vary.
How the Pool Salt Calculator Works
The calculator determines how much the pool's salt concentration needs to increase by subtracting the current salt level from the target salt level.
It then uses pool volume and the required increase in parts per million to estimate the weight of salt needed.
Pool Gallons × 8.34 × Required PPM Increase ÷ 1,000,000 = Pounds of Salt
If you are unsure of your pool's water volume, use the Pool Volume Calculator first.
Always test the existing salt concentration before adding salt. A pool can already contain significant salt even if it has never used a salt chlorine generator.
Consider adding somewhat less than the calculated amount initially, circulate the pool thoroughly, and retest before adding more. Excess salt generally cannot be removed without replacing some pool water.
For a more detailed explanation of calculating and adding salt, see How Much Salt Does My Pool Need?
Different salt chlorine generators have different operating ranges, so enter the target salinity specified by your system's manufacturer rather than relying automatically on the calculator's default value.
If you're still choosing a salt chlorine generator, use the Salt Cell Sizing Calculator to estimate an appropriate cell capacity for your pool.
If the salinity is correct but the system is not generating chlorine as expected, see Why Is My Salt System Not Producing Chlorine?
For more information about salinity, salt cells, chlorine production, sizing, and maintenance, see our Complete Guide to Saltwater Pool Systems.
If you're considering converting a pool to saltwater or replacing an existing chlorinator, compare available saltwater systems while verifying the manufacturer's pool-size rating, required salinity range, plumbing requirements, and equipment compatibility.
