Pool Heater Operating Cost Calculator
Estimate how much it may cost to operate your pool heater based on heater type, energy consumption, runtime, and your local energy rate. Compare the estimated hourly and total operating costs before choosing how and when to heat your pool.
Calculate Your Pool Heating Cost
Compare estimated operating costs for natural gas, propane and electric pool heaters using your local energy prices.
Your Estimated Heating Costs
A 400,000 BTU/hr natural gas heater running for four hours at $1.50 per therm has an estimated fuel cost of $24.
These estimates assume continuous operation at the entered input rate. Actual costs depend on equipment operation, local energy prices and applicable utility charges. The calculator does not estimate how long your pool will take to reach a target temperature.
How the Pool Heater Operating Cost Calculator Works
The calculator estimates energy cost based on the type of pool heater, its energy input, your local utility or fuel price, and the amount of time the heater operates.
Natural gas consumption is estimated using approximately 100,000 BTU per therm. Propane consumption is estimated using approximately 91,500 BTU per gallon. Electric heaters and heat pumps are calculated from their electrical input in kilowatts.
Energy Used Per Hour × Energy Price × Runtime = Estimated Operating Cost
The results estimate energy cost while the equipment is operating at the entered input. Actual costs can differ because gas heaters cycle and heat-pump power consumption and heating performance can change with air temperature, humidity, water temperature, and operating conditions.

Heater capacity also affects how quickly a pool can be heated. Use the Pool Heater Sizing Calculator or read What Size Pool Heater Do I Need? when determining the appropriate BTU capacity for your pool.

If you're comparing replacement or new heating equipment, consider both the purchase price and estimated operating cost. Verify heater capacity, energy source, electrical or gas requirements, plumbing compatibility, and manufacturer specifications before purchasing.
