Salt Cell Sizing Calculator
Estimate the salt chlorine generator capacity to consider based on your pool's water volume and desired sizing margin. Use the result as a starting point when comparing salt cells and complete salt chlorination systems.
Calculate Your Salt Chlorinator Size
Estimate a target rated cell capacity based on your pool volume and selected sizing margin.
Your Estimated Requirements
For a 15,000-gallon pool, a 1.5× sizing margin gives a target rated capacity of 22,500 gallons.
Compare this target with available manufacturer-rated salt chlorinators. If your calculated target falls between two available cell sizes, you can evaluate the next larger model.
Gallon ratings are a starting point, not a guarantee of adequate chlorine production. Check each manufacturer's chlorine output, recommended operating conditions and required daily runtime. Sun exposure, water temperature, bather load and other conditions affect chlorine demand. A larger cell does not replace proper water testing or maintenance.
How the Salt Cell Sizing Calculator Works
Salt chlorine generators are commonly rated according to the maximum pool volume they are designed to serve. This calculator multiplies your pool's water volume by the selected sizing margin.
If you are unsure of your pool's water volume, use the Pool Volume Calculator first.
At minimum, the salt system's rated capacity should be appropriate for the actual pool volume. Selecting additional capacity can provide more operating headroom during periods of increased chlorine demand.
The optional 1.25×, 1.5×, and 2× settings are Pool Equipment Lab planning margins. They are not manufacturer requirements.

Before purchasing a salt system, verify the manufacturer's maximum pool capacity, chlorine production rating, salinity requirements, electrical requirements, and compatibility with any existing automation system.
Cell sizing can also affect how hard the salt cell needs to operate over its service life. Our guide to How Long Do Salt Cells Last? explains the factors that influence cell longevity.
After choosing a properly sized system, use the Pool Salt Calculator to estimate how much salt is needed to reach a target salinity level.

Once you know the approximate capacity your pool requires, compare available saltwater chlorinators and replacement cells while verifying that the exact product is compatible with your pool size, controller, power center, plumbing, and existing equipment.
